2023-06-30 More Middle Lagoon

2023-06-30 More Middle Lagoon

We woke to a great view out of the van.  Not surprisingly, it was overcast again.  The boys had one last go at pulling our busted generator apart to see if they could find the problem.  No luck.  I think it is going in the bin so we can fit in a replacement when we pass back through Broome.  Our electrical system is struggling severely after 4 nights off grid and literally no sunshine for the last 5 days.  Kieran loaned us his generator and Bob…

2023-06-29 Middle Lagoon

An early start for us this morning with a sunrise walk to Squeaky Beach.  Lovely rocks and the tide was quite low in the mangroves.  Today has been another cloudy day, but we’ve dodged rain for the most part. We resumed our original program today with a relatively short drive to Middle Lagoon.  The road in was 30km of corrugations, mud and water.  I’m still in awe that we are driving these access roads given our lack of 4wding experience previously! We arrived in…

2023-06-28 Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat

Well today was a bit of a weird day. It started well enough with our explorer cruise getting cancelled again, as expected due to inclement weather. We headed to the restaurant and had cuppas overlooking the water out of the wind. Karen and Kieran decided to go on a cultural tour while Bob and I went looking for parts for our brand new broken generator….without success. We met back up and Karen and I decided to do a jigsaw, and…

2023-06-27 Pearling Farm

So today was pretty miserable. Cool, windy and drizzly. Our cruise we’d booked was unsurprisingly cancelled this morning. We’ll try again for tomorrow, but chances are it will also be cancelled. With no sun at all to power our solar charging set up we have had to fire up the generator to charge the van batteries. It could be a long week or so without sun…we feel so ‘lucky’ to be around here with the biggest dry season rain event…

2023-06-26 Cape Leveque

So I have to count today as cloudy day number 2 since we left home. I got up early and went biking on Cable Beach with Karen and Kieran. It wasn’t long before I realised the sand was a bit softer than the other day. I pealed off and left them to it and enjoyed the muted colour over the rocks. Packing was undertaken slowly this morning and Jase and Sue came over to confirm what we anticipated – they…

2023-06-25 Brooming

This morning we packed breakfast and headed to Gantheaume Point to enjoy it. It was actually a little cool until the sun worked it’s way into the sky a bit. We all enjoyed our pancakes, croissants and bacon and eggs on the beach followed by an explore on the rocks. We headed our own ways again for the morning. Bob and I decided to give the car it’s 2 monthly wash, whether it needed it or not 😉 . We…

2023-06-24 Cable Beach

So today we have hit 8 weeks on the road. Some truly amazing experiences that we will remember forever. It’s not all roses despite the curated blog. An update on the stats from the first 4 weeks… We have travelled 9920km. As I mentioned earlier in the blog, we aren’t specifically tracking amount spent on fuel, but the new record cost is $2.90/L at Warmun Roadhouse (only displacing Marree by 1c/L). Number of snapped UHF aerials is 2 (both the…

2023-06-23 Broome

Last night Karen and I headed out for some Boab astro photography (did I mention how much I like Boabs?). I couldn’t find the trees in the dark that I had thought would be fantastic at night so had to make do with one beside the road. After some drone fun this morning (Kieran and Bob both had a play as well), we headed on our way to Broome. While enroute we had a chat with Adam from work who…

2023-06-22 Tunnel Creek

Karen and I set our alarms this morning and were out on our bikes just after 545. The light was just beautiful and it was 10km of exploring and photo taking. So delightful. I’m struggling to cull so maybe I’ll just indulge myself and post lots of shots from today (and in case I didn’t tell you, Boabs are my new favourite tree). We headed out the 60km of gravel after brekky to Tunnel Creek. I was excited and a…

An early start for everyone this morning – all from different locations.  We all updated the group chat as we passed through locations with cellular reception.  Today was the first cloudy day we have had since leaving home almost 8 weeks ago We came across Jase and Sue at Halls Creek while we were getting fuel, so travelled the next 300km with them to Fitzroy Crossing.  It was cool to pass over the recently completed temporary river crossing and see the progress on…
