2025-07-03 Cuttlefish!

This morning we all headed out for a sunrise walk/run to Point Lowly lighthouse.  It was so mild compared to the last few days. The temperature was 14 degrees in the van when we woke this morning compared to 5 degrees yesterday! It was a really lovely sunrise and nice to be able to head out without a big travel day ahead of us.

Today was our first organised tour for the trip.  Sue coordinated a Giant Cuttlefish tour a few months ago for us all, and today was the day.  Truly fascinating.  Water visibility was amazing today and although I am very disappointed with the photos through the glass bottom of the boat, it was just so interesting.  Cuttlefish are very intelligent, only live for a couple of years and the giant Spencer Gulf variety come to mate along this very narrow strip of shore for a couple of months each year once the water temp drops low enough.  After nearly being killed off due to fishing between the 1990’s and 2013, the population has increased significantly since marine protection zones have been implemented.

We headed into Whyalla for lunch and a walk on the jetty.  Unlike when we visited with Nicki and Tony nearly 7 years ago, there were no dolphins.  Jase and Sue tried their luck with squiding here but left empty handed.

Then we moved about 100km down the road to Cowell.  Bikes came off the vans and we and the Scotts headed out to explore.  We checked out the silo art, the jetty (where Jase and Sue tried squiding again) and finished off the day with a glass of wine at the Commercial Hotel (where once again we visited with Nicki and Tony in 2019).  A fire at the Allens site tonight with dinner and we are all satisfied with all the activities for today.

Tomorrow we head to Elliston for a night.
