2025-07-12 Parkrun
Last night we made a late decision to go to the Kalgoorlie Parkrun. Jase and Sue had a lot to get through this morning so didn’t get there, but Karen rode her bike and we all met over there. The morning was cold but not windy and great conditions for some exercise. Kieran ran all the way, Karen ran most and Bob and I ran some. I really enjoyed it.

The remainder of the morning we all spent doing various chores. Bob and I managed to fit in a visit to the Goldfields museum before departing Kalgoorlie. We got a great view of the mines surrounding the town from the top of the poppet head.

There were a lot of fascinating stories and insights into the early gold digger life at the museum. One of the more amusing snippets detailed how gold telluride was first identified in Kalgoorlie in 1896. However, rocks containing it had been used for years on tracks and walkways and had even been used as building stones as it was believed to be ‘fools gold’. Before it was ripped back up, the streets of Kalgoorie were actually paved with gold 🙂 .

We all met up around midday on the outskirts of the city and put in a decent afternoon of travel west. I even had my first tow of the caravan for the trip (pretty sure Bob waited until the skies were blue and there were no blustery wind gusts for me to deal with). Well it was 23 degrees and sunny when I took over the wheel and by the time I finished it was 12 degrees, raining and windy again….
Tonight we have stopped at Merredin. The Allens and us have pulled in to the caravan park for our second night connected to power and more importantly water so we can get a heap of washing out of the way. The Scotts have stopped a little up the road at a free camp as they got all their washing done in Kalgoorlie and topped up with more water there.
