Today was designated Wave Rock Day.  Jase and Sue decided to do their own thing as they’ve done it before.  To start the day we went and found Karen and Kieran and they took us on a walk to see Merredin Rock and the really cool dam system that was built off the rock runoff in 1893 to supply water to the railways and the town.

Then we started our lengthy trek for the day. As we headed south the land turned to primarily farming with interspersed granite outcrops.  The canola fields are just starting to take off and the views were so lovely.

We made it to Wave Rock by lunchtime and embarked on the various walks.  I had heard less than enthusiastic reports on Wave Rock so my expectations were low…so fortunately I was very pleasantly surprised.  We saw the rock from above and below as well as the Hippo’s Yawn further around the Hyden Rock formation.  The top of the rock was dammed in the early 1900’s and the water supplied the nearby town of Hyden (spam incoming).

After an incredibly difficult exercise in extracting the vans from the carpark with all the tourists, vehicles and people with no idea how much space large rigs need to manoeuvre, we started our lengthy afternoon trek towards the coast.  We stopped at some super cool metal sculptures at Statues Lake before pulling up at a free camp in York after sunset.

The town seems really interesting – we headed out and found a German pub for a beverage after dinner and plan on a frosty morning walk to explore before we head towards the coast tomorrow and meet back up with Jase and Sue.
