2025-07-20 Shell Beach
An early start this morning (for us, the Scott’s are up early every morning) and we were on the road around 730 for an explore of Shark Bay. We drove around 50km into Shark Bay to Shell Beach where we had breakfast and the Scott’s put the kayaks in. As at Hamelin Pool, the salinity here is about double the ocean due to the Faure Sill which is a natural barrier to tides flowing into the bay. One of only a few beaches in the world where the environment allows tiny cockle shells to thrive with the beach area formed entirely of shells rather than sand.

While the Scott’s kayaked, the rest of us went for a walk on the beach. It really was incredible. We all layed in the shells – at least it wasn’t like sand getting into every fold of your clothing.

We droned, with a super close encounter between Jase’s and my drones while I was letting my drone do some auto videoing. I can’t video, and I had literally no idea where the drone was while it was dancing around. A lucky near miss!
Bob and I did the selfie thing (as you do) and then the others were super accommodating and helped to bury us for another photo! My only issue was getting shells out of my hair hours later 🙂 .

After spending the best part of 3 hours at the beach we headed further into Shark Bay. First stop was Whalebone Point with some lovely colours to the rocks.

We moved to Eagle Bluff and Elephant Rock for lunch. We spent some time looking for the resident dugongs, sting rays, sharks, turtles and anything else that passed by. We saw a couple of small sharks but that had to do us for today.

Then it was in to Denham to gather info for our return to the area after the Coral Coast and Karijini. There are some lovely beach camp spots we’d be keen to try in 6 weeks.
This evening we have all enjoyed catch ups with the families, though Billie could have sounded more excited to hear our voices…Murphy at least looked partially interested 🙂 .
Tomorrow we move forward to Carnarvon.

Hi there. Just caught up on your blog posts, they are great and very informative. Photos are great too. There doesn’t seem to be the crowds of grey nomads and travelers that we have heard of. In fact Shell Beach looked like a deserted island – beautiful
Hi Lynn, Great to hear from you! Yes so far it hasn’t been too bad at all for crowds. Might be about to change once we hit Exmouth in a few days though…
