2025-08-12 Kalamina Gorge
Karijini is so good! So glad we ensured we got here this trip after missing last trip. It is physically demanding, but I am so enjoying being able to do this in such better physical condition than our last trip thanks to Tani’s program we’ve been on since Xmas. She’s worked wonders for both Bob and I 🙂 .
Today we headed to Kalamina Gorge. This one isn’t such a well known gorge, and includes 6km of horrid corrugations to get there. We gave Jase and Sue a lift in as Mav put the anchors out and wasn’t up for the trip today. Once we hit the gravel the tyre pressures were dropped and we inched ourselves in to the gorge. While not as imposing and narrow as some we have already seen, I really loved being able to enjoy the outlook (rather than looking at my feet the whole time, making sure they weren’t about to fall off a ledge), and the many mini waterfalls along the gorge floor.

We arrived at the Rock Arch signifying the far end of the hike and the Scott’s and I went in for a dip. So excruciatingly cold. The pain in my arms and shoulders just didn’t go away until I got out. The Scott’s scrambled to the top of the arch and enjoyed the view from the top.
After a lengthy stop at the pool, we started our trek back. Lunch was had around half way back before we climbed back out and headed back to camp by mid afternoon after a quick stop at the visitor information centre.

We have a big day planned for tomorrow for our last day in the area, so I decided I need to complete the Dales Gorge walk as well as get some sunset photos of the Fern Pool as it may be our last chance. We all headed out in the later afternoon (except Karen, who caught up with family and met us at Fortescue Falls for a swim) and traversed the gorge in lovely afternoon light. More cascades for me to photograph (see feature photo).

I headed through to Fern Pool where I grabbed the required shots and then we had another swim across to the falls. The water felt positively balmy compare to this morning’s dip and the water coming down the falls almost felt warm. We let ourselves be pummelled by the water before heading back for a last light walk back to camp.

Tomorrow we plan to walk Knox and Joffre Gorges to round out our week in Karijini. My bucket is filling nicely 🙂 .
