2025-09-30 Granite Skywalk

Pack up day again today. We are getting very good at it almost 14 weeks since we left home. Just over 4 weeks left of living the dream for Bob and I while the Scott’s will be staying away for a bit longer with their new status of retirees.

We left before 9 and headed to the water precinct of Albany to the Hilton Hotel. We bought a 3 pass at the visitor info centre when we arrived in town which included the ANZAC Discovery Centre and the Whaling Station. There were a few options for the third experience but unfortunately with yesterday being a public holiday there were pretty well none of the options available. So this morning we found ourselves at the hotel for a buffet breakfast to use it up. Not the most exciting experience, but at least it used up the credit.

Once everyone had filled up we hit the road and headed north to the Granite Skywalk. In less than an hour we arrived and prepped for the 2 hour hike from the carpark. While the skywalk was only 2.2km away, it was a grade 4 hike and had over 300m of elevation! The track was well formed though so it was the easiest grade 4 hike we have attacked on this trip.

We reached the top to some really picturesque granite rock formations. We played around (as you do) for some photo ops before finishing the trek with some rock scrambling to get to the skywalk.

Just a bit breezy!

The view from the top was amazing – the Stirling Ranges in one direction and crops in the other. Karri trees in the forest below. Unfortunately the Karri forest has been very impacted by phytophthora dieback – a plant disease impacting the south west of WA.

We hiked back to the vehicles and travelled around 150km to Bremer Bay via the base of the Stirling Ranges. Some unexpected gravel roads but they were well maintained so no stress for Bob on this one 🙂 .

We have arrived at Bremer Bay where we will be staying for the next 4 nights. A slowing of pace (I hope). We have met some fellow travellers tonight who have given advice on the must do things we should include on our stay here.
