Move day again today and I was really ready for a new outlook. While I’ve really enjoyed our Pilbara 11 days so far, I’m not going to lie and pretend that the red iron soil dust doesn’t become very tedious. It gets on and in literally everything, and with limited water there just isn’t enough to wash the caravan floor 3 times a day and the sheets and towels every 5 minutes once they go red as well. So it has been a welcome change to head towards the coast around Karratha today. While still in the Pilbara, we are trading red dirt for sand….
It was an early start as we headed to Karratha in time for a late breakfast. We saw iron ore trains on the way and almost got excited as we hit the outskirts of town for our first time in civilisation for a couple of weeks.

We topped up with water, picked up some odds and ends in town before heading to our camp at Cleaverville 40km north. The Scott’s stayed in town and hit the mountain bike tracks for the afternoon.
At camp we found Jase and Sue who had spent the morning fishing off the beach. Have to say we are pretty impressed with the outlook from the van for the next 3 nights. Probably should wash the red dirt off the windows so we can actually see out of them when they are closed….oh that’s right that requires unlimited water supplies that we don’t have…

Then I spent some time mounting photo frames of some of my favourite photos from the trip so far on the cupboards. Pretty happy with how they turned out.

Then some explore time down at the beach in front of the van. It was incredibly windy – so we didn’t venture too far. Winds should lighten over the next couple of days to enable some explore time.

Bob and I then decided to spend the later part of the afternoon having a look around Point Samson 40km further towards Port Hedland (where we have elected to not visit this time around). Jase and Sue came along and after visiting the historical jetty (which has been mostly destroyed in cyclones and is now just an observation deck over land) and the local beach, we enjoyed happy hour and a civilised dinner in suburbia at the local tavern. We are missing our Thursday night dinners with the crew!

Then back to camp where we found Karen and Kieran at their site after their afternoon activities. Such an awesome view!

Tomorrow is more explore time around the region. It’s nice to be on the coast again (oh that’s right I’ve already mentioned that).
