2025-10-17 Yorke Peninsula
After two days of relocating and not much else, today we resumed our holiday programme and it felt good! We gave ourselves a more relaxed start today and were out of Kimba around 830. Our plan was to beeline past the places we’ve been before on our way to the Yorke Peninsula. We bypassed Port Augusta and Port Pirie (visited here with Nicki and Tony for lunch back at the start of 2019).
Our first stop (other than a roadside outlet for a fresh food top up) was Port Broughton. We headed straight to the water and enjoyed a walk along the jetty and the shore before moving on to Wallaroo.

Here the jetty was commercial and did not appear to be open to the public. We limited ourselves to a drive through town for this one and didn’t get out to explore. Next stop was Moonta where once again we drove straight to the jetty. Instantaneously, we felt we’d like to stay here for the night. Without getting out of the car we drove straight to the waterfront caravan park next to the jetty and tried our luck for a site. We were lucky so were on our site and set up in time for a late lunch.
This afternoon we have spent hours exploring the area. First up was the heritage copper mining precinct that was active from the later 1800’s through to the early 1900’s. Engine houses, boiler houses and a large tailing heap were all part of the ruins that we walked around. We found it so interesting – signs and photos showed the area as it was in its heyday with information about the mining equipment that was used.

From here we headed to our next jetty at Port Hughes – a town only a few km from Moonta Bay. We walked this jetty as well before driving back via the coast and stopping to look at the clay cliffs along the shore.

Back to the van to keep the washing machine going before a sunset expedition to the Moonta Bay jetty for some photography with my actual camera (rather than the iPhone). The colour was pretty, but it didn’t live up to the cloud forecast from my research this afternoon.

Finally, we walked the jetty after dark to round out 3 jetties traversed for the day. It’s been a great day back at it. Tomorrow we move on further south into the peninsula. Not sure where we will end up.
