2023-06-04 Kakadu

This morning we set off from Mataranka after a lovely few down days and headed north. A quick stop in the town for coffee etc and we were again treated to Brolgas wandering around. These ones were very used to people so didn’t disappear as soon as the camera came out.

After a stop off for some fresh bread in Katherine (yummy – we didn’t realise that even Coles in the centre of Oz sells frozen bread…), we had lunch along the way and arrived at our camp in Kakadu mid afternoon. Oh my goodness, what a day of travel can do to the weather! I think the north forgot that we are now in the dry season and the humidity should at least be bearable. 33 degrees and not comfortable at all. After dinner we went for a wander to the river and carefully looked for beady eyes. We thought we found some, but if they were they were only little. No swimming in natural waterholes for us for a while!

We all retired to our vans by 730 tonight as the mozzies were off the scale – even with loads of spray on. Currently 28 deg at 8pm and wondering how tonight’s sleep will go.

Early start for us tomorrow on a sunrise Yellow Water cruise. Looking forward to it lots.
