2023-07-26 Durack River

We are adjusting to the slowing of pace and life is particularly pleasant.  This morning after another relaxed start we all piled into the Scott’s car and headed to the Durack River about 20km away with a picnic lunch.  We were keen to see the river crossing here as it has been very high since the rain a few weeks ago and travellers we have spoken to have all said it was the most challenging crossing.  Thankfully it has dropped quite a lot so water depth won’t be an issue.  The bottom is very rocky so tomorrow when we cross with the vans it will be a very lurching affair.  It was a little off-putting seeing more than one set of rims and tyres discarded at the crossing!

We set up a picnic next to the river where we could watch the crossing and enjoyed some time relaxing (a common theme these days, I know).  We finished our latest game of Canasta with Karen and I emerging victorious, did crosswords and explored the river bank.  We didn’t see any evidence of crocs even though it looks like a perfect habitat for them.

We headed back to the homestead for more scones and another chilled afternoon on the grass.  I will never take grass for granted again!  Today I have finished the next craft project and it is now hanging on the wardrobe door (for today at least, before we hit the corrugations again tomorrow).

We arrived back to the vans with lovely afternoon light so the drone went up before the fire went on and pizzas were cooked for dinner.  We were fortunate yesterday when 2 different sets of departing campers gifted us their unused wood.

Tomorrow we head to Home Valley Station for 3 nights.  It has been closed for the last fortnight due to water contamination problems.  We have been waiting to see whether it was going to open in time for our booking and luckily it opened at midday today.  The itinerary gods are still on our side 🙂 .  We will probably still exist off our water tanks for the duration of the trip to be safe, though.
