2023-07-30 Pentecost River

Today we finally crossed the infamous Pentecost. After hearing stories of 25% of vehicles requiring retrieval a month ago, we were so happy to traverse this lengthy crossing with low water level and no surprises under the surface. We timed our crossing close to low tide as the river is tidal (hence the croc warnings). Not the trickiest crossing we have done by far 🙂

Once we were over the river, the tar started….and it may not stop till we get home! (except for the driveway in and gorges at El Questro). The gravel road travelling has been interesting and the rig has handled it exceptionally well (except for the van step incident…). Bob and I are so glad to be at the end of it intact, if not a bit rattled to our bones. I’m sure the Scott’s would turn around and do it all again in a heartbeat 🙂 .

We enjoyed the shortish travel to El Questro Resort today with the Cockburn Ranges beside us.

Oh, and did I mention how much I love boabs?

The day was really hot again – 30 deg by 745 this morning which made for a sweaty pack up. There were two water crossings to get into El Questro which we didn’t even flinch at.

Once we got ourselves sorted at camp, we all headed to the swimming waterhole and spent the afternoon there. Very pleasant.

From there it was happy hour at the bar with live music, pizzas for dinner and a lovely Vanuatu Independence Day Celebration on the lawn which was just such a happy display.

We are leaving super early tomorrow to attack the El Questro Gorge hike. The expectation based on what we have read is that I won’t be able to get all the way there, but will enjoy what I can manage. My head is determined to get all the way, but I will be realistic with what is achievable.

  1. Great journey along Gibb River Road with the scenery changing from west to east. Your blog has given me such a better appreciation of the area. Thanks for sharing!
