2025-07-08 Head of Bight
This morning we left our free camp at 830. The sun didn’t rise until around 745 so as someone that rises with the sun it felt much earlier to me. It will be much easier after tomorrow when we cross the border into WA and the time moves back 1.5 hours.
First stop today was at the Head of Bight. This is a whale nursery where we watched southern right whale mother and calf pairs slowly swim past. So majestic and quite different to the humpback whales that are so common in Newcastle. The weather was windy with intermittent downpours, however we still got to see some amazing scenery as well.

Next was a petrol stop at the iconic Nullarbor Roadhouse. Unfortunately, the weather was quite dismal by this time so no hole of golf was played here. I did contemplate going out anyway as I could definitely use some practice based on my results from yesterday…..

We spent the afternoon popping in to the various lookouts to see the Bunda Cliffs, These are the longest line of sea cliffs in the world at 200km in length! Truly amazing!

We have pulled up this afternoon at 52k Peg Campground. This is a free camp 52km from the WA border. Once again it was a fresh food feast for nibbles and dinner for everyone tonight as we deplete our stores prior to quarantine tomorrow. We had the warmest fires of the trip using up our firewood that can’t come with us either. We have left a pile for tomorrow night’s campers as well as we couldn’t get through it all.

Tomorrow there are severe weather warnings for the entire region. High winds are expected again so we will plan our day based on what is happening when we wake up.
