After our movie night last night we got a late message from Jase and Sue saying their fridge had failed and they wouldn’t be able head off with us first thing in the morning. We all decided to wait and see how the day unfolded and fortunately they were fixed and ready to go again by lunchtime, which is incredible seeing as how we were quoted 6 weeks to investigate our fridge alarming on our 1 week old caravan back in November last year!

With the extra time in Geraldton, the Scott’s attacked a local mountain bike track which sounded challenging but fun, and we were much more sedate and visited the Maritime Museum where had a guided tour and learned the history of local shipwrecks and their cargo, murders and hangings…..

After lunch we all met back up and headed for our first stop at Hutt Lagoon. This is a ridiculously pink lake (now I’ve seen 2 in my life and both within the last 2 weeks). The pink algae in the lagoon are cultivated for their high beta-carotene content (with anti-oxidants and vitamin A), which is extracted and used for food colouring and diet supplements. I could have spent the afternoon here. I have a stupid amount of photos so have tried to cull.

Then we moved to Kalbarri. We are passing through this way and will spend a few nights here after our time inland at Karijini so it was a nice afternoon with gorgeous weather to get a glimpse. We saw the Natural Bridge, Castle Cove and Island Rock all in glorious late afternoon light, plus watched baby Humpback whales breaching all over the place. I can’t wait to come back here and see the other sights this region has to offer.

Finally we headed an hour up the road (along with what turned out to be a squillion other caravaners) to a free camp on a river where we had our first fire for over a week and watched the Milky Way above us. Just a one night stop here and we keep moving north.

  1. Once again, very engaging photos Kerri. Is it back to hump whales along the west coast, more than southern right whales?
