2025-08-03 Shothole Canyon

This morning we woke to wind (what a surprise) and light rain. We headed to the beach to drink our morning cuppas ready for the day and Karen and Kieran joined us.

The Scott’s decided to spend the later part of the morning hiking along the Tulki Creek bed to the small gorge up further in the Cape Range National Park. This is not a marked track, however Bob and I decided to come along and it is the first time since we left home 5 weeks ago that we have felt hot when we were out of the wind.

After we arrived back at the vans, the Scott’s and the Allen’s had arranged to meet up for some more snorkelling at Turquoise Bay. Bob and I are completely snorkelled-out after 10 separate snorkelling outings over the last week. We enjoyed our newly salt-free washed hair and headed into Exmouth for some ‘town time’, and revisited the Whalebone Brewery for a late lunch of pizza and a glass of wine.

We then headed to Pebble Beach on the eastern coastline of the Exmouth Peninsula. Interesting, but nothing like as impressive as Shell Beach down at Shark Bay.

Then we spent a slow half an hour or so driving 12km on a corrugated road through the Shothole Canyon. I was super impressed with this. Really interesting and varied landscape. So glad we made the effort.

On the way back out I saw my first wild Sturt Desert Peas. All previous ones have been part of a cultivated garden. They are really quite striking.

We filled our car water bladder and picked up a few groceries before heading back to Tulki Beach for our last night on the Ningaloo coast. Tonight we have continued forward bookings – we will all be largely following the same program, however have different priorities around a few locations that will mean variations in bookings. I have also finished my third macrame project for the trip. Tally so far is a knitted beanie and scarf, macrame coaster, photo frame and owl, and crocheted hanging basket and bedside knick-knack container for Bob. Marching through the supplies quite quickly 🙂 .

Tomorrow we all move to Bullara Station for 2 nights. Actually looking forward to some non-coast time.
