2025-10-21 Batten Down Day

Well, not surprisingly we woke to rain and wind this morning. It didn’t take long for us to agree that towing the van today was not clever or desirable at all. So another day in the Edithburgh region it was.

After taking the opportunity to sort some life admin and doing some more of my jigsaw we decided to brave the elements and head out with the car to do some of the sightseeing that was planned for today as we were meant to be relocating with the van attached.

First stop was Wool Bay where we stopped in at the old lime kiln overlooking the town jetty. We headed down to the jetty and looked back at the active commercial Port Giles jetty which is a grain terminal and not open to the public. Once the wind and rain got the better of me, the photos stopped and refuge was sought in the car.

We got the water tank mural art shot before moving on to Stansbury.

After the coastal trawl (that we didn’t get out of the car for) we headed to the shops and found a cafe for lunch. The 40m walk to the cafe from the car park felt really difficult with the wind so it was a relief to get inside. An hour later after our bellies were full and we were game to head outside we headed for the car. Oh my!!! the wind was so much worse. Got to the car, headed for the town water tank where photos were taken from the car window and headed back via the tank art at Coobowie to the caravan to make sure it hadn’t blown away.

On the way, we called in to the Edithburgh jetty about 150m from our caravan site to watch the waves smashing into the jetty and a crazy person walking along it. We realised that even the fur seals (or sea lions – copious googling hasn’t helped us work out which – help Louise!!!) were sheltering up on the concrete bunds at the start of the jetty. They were getting such a pummelling, poor things. Serious weather!

Back to the van where all was good. The afternoon was spent inside the van sheltering – which literally hasn’t happened since we arrived in Kalbarri at the start of September for a couple of hours – rain only that time not horrendous winds. Can’t really complain about that.

An unexpected lull in the wind late afternoon allowed us to stretch our legs and head out for a walk. We found the seals/sea lions again and they were happily frolicking in the water adjacent to the jetty.

Bob was keen to check out the town swimming spot called the ‘Tidal Pool’ – currently out of action due to storm damage. The water was so rough we couldn’t even see the pool below….

Then a walk back to the van via the town centre which included a stop at the pub for a drink. We finished our afternoon escape before the wind direction changed and started to ramp up again.

The wind is increasing to gale force overnight so we’ll reassess travel in the morning. Looking like it will settle late morning.

  1. Amazing things to see even in the worst conditions. I think they might be sea lions as there are visible ear flaps. Also if they can rotate their flippers forward and walk on land rather than belly slide, they are lions.
